The Sacred Heart MessengerThe 16-year old Carlo Acutis is very much a saint for today. The July Messenger tells us he will be beatified this October in Assisi. The issue also carries a tribute to GAA icon Seán Boylan, who ‘lives as if he were to die tomorrow but learns as if he were to live forever’, according to John Scally. Environmentalist Seán McDonagh SSC alerts us to the fact that pollution is continually undermining our health and reducing our life expectancy – a theme carried through in the Pope’s monthly prayer, for the pastoral care of the sick, where Paddy Carberry SJ observes that we are a fragile people living in a beautiful but fragile world.  The Church itself is going through a period of uncertainty and ‘wilderness’, writes Archbishop Dermot Farrell, but he says this journey may lay the foundations of real, effective change. Gerry O’Hanlon SJ echoes this hope, with a summary of progress to date at the Vatican Synodal Assembly and the plans for the next gathering in Rome this October. The Irish Bishops also plan a national synodal assembly event in 2025. Both Brendan McManus SJ and Mary Hunt write about how closely related love and trust are and that to give and to receive love is a way of both experiencing God’s love for us and thanking Him for the gift of life.  Among our regular features, John Feehan extols the myriad benefits of the humble nettle, we have several reflections including from Sr Stan, and our crosswords, puzzles and competitions will keep younger readers occupied during the summer months.
