The UN Gift Box creating awareness on Trafficking

The GIFT Box was in Tralee as part of a nationwide tour. It was no easy undertaking to assemble it and to have volunteers stand in the cold for two days  inviting visitors and distributing information all with the aim of creating awareness on trafficking in Ireland.  Well done and thank you to all those who helped.

The GIFT Box aims to raise awareness about Human Trafficking. Its gift box exterior symbolises the way traffickers entice their victims with false promises and when you enter this large street sculpture you are presented with a different reality.

Its Irish tour is a joint initiative of the Loreto Sisters and APT (Act to Prevent Trafficking) with the support of the Department of Justice. It was hosted in Tralee by the Diocese of Kerry Justice, Peace and Creation /JPIC Committee

People-trafficking is the fastest growing means by which people are enslaved, the fastest growing international crime, and one of the largest sources of income for organised crime.

In Ireland the central message of the awareness campaign of Anti Human Trafficking Unit (Department of Justice) is “Don’t Close Your Eyes to Human Trafficking”. You are encouraged to share any suspicions or information on the crime with the Gardaí who will then investigate accordingly.
