Our Lady’s Well, Kenmare

Located 300 metres from Holy Cross Church, Kenmare

Our Lady’s Well is a spring well which has been used by locals as a place of prayer. Situated in the townland of Gortamullen, the well is referred to as Tobar Mhuire, Mary’s Well on old maps. Beside the well is a flat rock with a deeply incised cross made by those doing the ‘rounds’.

The rounds are made by praying while walking ‘deiseal’, that is in a clockwise direction, following the sun. A decade of the rosary is said as we walk around the circular path. After each decade, a stone is used to mark the cross on the rock next to the well.

The feast of Our Lady’s Assumption on August 15th is the day of special devotion here, visiting the well, doing the ‘rounds’ and saying the rosary. Mass is celebrated at the well each August. Please check with the Kenmare parish for details – Kenmare Parish.

August 15th is also a Fair Day in Kenmare.
