Why is it a place of pilgrimage?

The Mass rock or “Carrig an Aifrinn” came in to being due to the persecution of Irish Catholics following the introduction of the penal laws 1695 -1750. It is a place of great spiritual significance and is listed as no.3 in the top 5 of pilgrim walks in Ireland. It served the people of Farraniaragh, Coomatlackane along with those from Scariff and Deenish Islands who rowed through often choppy water to hear the Word of God and receive the Eucharist. On the verge of the sea overlooking the Atlantic Ocean it can be visited as part of The Wild Atlantic Way off the N70.

There is ample parking available, toilet facilities, wheelchair friendly and there is also a café at Derrynane House.

This year is the 250 anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell, The Liberator, the man who achieved Catholic Emancipation for us in 1829. Combine the visit to the Church and the Mass Rock for a wonderful experience combining place, history, religion and culture for an unforgettable experience as part of your visit on the Ring of Kerry.
