Diocese of Kerry Invites Everyone to Play Their Part During the Season of Creation
The Season of Creation is an annual Christian celebration dedicated to prayer and action for the care of our common home. From 1 September to 4 October, Christians throughout the world come together to give thanks for the gift of God’s creation and to renew their commitment to protecting it.
This year, the Diocese of Kerry is inviting individuals, families and parish communities to take practical action during the Season of Creation.
The theme for 2026 is Living Water. Water is essential to all life, yet it is a precious resource that can easily be wasted or polluted. Everyone is encouraged to consider one practical action they can take to conserve water and protect the natural environment.
The Diocese of Kerry’s Care of Creation Committee has produced a special leaflet for parishes. It offers practical suggestions on water, biodiversity, and the care of local church grounds. The Living Water leaflet will be available in parishes across the diocese.
Parishes are also encouraged to respond to the Irish Bishops’ call to dedicate 30% of church grounds to biodiversity by 2030. At least 15 parishes across the Diocese of Kerry have already begun taking steps to enhance biodiversity. Other parishes are now invited to join them.
As part of the diocesan celebrations, Millstreet Parish will host a special event on Saturday, 19 September, from 1.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. in the grounds of Millstreet Church.
Those attending will have an opportunity to see the work undertaken by the parish, meet others, exchange ideas and receive practical resources and encouragement. Everyone is welcome, and parish representatives are particularly encouraged to attend and bring ideas back to their own communities.
During the Season of Creation, events will also be held in parishes across the diocese. People are encouraged to attend an event in another parish, see what is being done and consider what could be introduced in their own local community.
Radio Kerry’s weekly Horizons programme and the daily Just a Thought reflections will highlight the Season of Creation throughout September.
This Season of Creation, everyone is invited to take one practical step: conserve water, support biodiversity, attend a local event or help make their parish grounds a place where nature can flourish. Small actions, undertaken together, can make a real difference.
