Word Of God

Scripture or the Bible, which is also referred to as the Word of God, is God’s Word of hope and promise to us. We hear readings from it at Mass and at baptisms, funerals, weddings. It speaks to us today, as we listen and allow it to find a place in our lives. The Word of God reminds us of God’s faithfulness.

In the present liturgical year, from Advent 2009 until the feast of Christ the King, November 2010, the Gospel of the year will be that of St. Luke.

A little thought on the Word of God in our lives from Fr. Ezeogu, C.S.S.P

  • I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our mobile phones?
  • What if we carried it around in our handbags or pockets?
  • What if we turned back to get it if we forgot it?
  • What if we flipped through it several times a day?
  • What if we used it to receive messages?
  • What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?
  • What if we gave it to our children as a gift?
  • What if we used it as we travelled?
  • What if we used it in a case of emergency?
  • What if we upgraded it to include a 24 hour, 7 day a week, service from the Holy Spirit?
  • This is something to make you go ..... hmmm... where is my Bible?
  • Oh, one final thing. Unlike our mobiles, we don't ever have to worry about our bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill!!!

Megan McKenna has pointers for encountering God in the Word

1. REMEMBER: The Scriptures are inspired. That means whenever you (especially a community) read them for conversion, you will always hear/find what you need to do, to follow and imitate Jesus more closely.

2. REMEMBER: Whenever two or three are gathered together, there I am in your midst—this is Jesus’ promise to be with us when we pray, especially when we gather to study the Scriptures and to seek to make our lives look more like Jesus’ life, as his disciples.

3. REMEMBER: The community is inspired too. The Spirit is with you whenever you have to decide, using the Scriptures, to forgive one another, to help each other, to be faithful and stand up for what you believe, but always as servants to those most in need and left outside by others.

4. REMEMBER: The Scriptures were first of all written for our conversion, as individuals and as communities and Church. This is the way we are supposed to live and to give good example to others, especially by including people, taking care of the least among us and being truthful, compassionate and in service to all.

They challenge us to change: our behavior, our minds/thoughts/ideas, our ways of talking, praying and what we do with our time, our resources, talents/money and faith.

They confront us with the truth of the Gospel, of the way of Jesus and confront us to look at our lives honestly and see where we need to change now.

They comfort us in our struggle to make the word of the Lord come true in our lives, and encourage us to help each other to grow and become more like Jesus. God wants us to be holy, like Jesus, so that we are all the beloved children, sons and daughters of God, with Jesus.
