The celebration of the Mass is the action of Christ and the people of God, the whole congregation and all the ministers. Each of us has a particular part to play – as laypeople, we may at times participate simply as members of the congregation, adding our prayer with that of all the others gathered with us.
At other times, we may have responsibility for proclaiming the Word, preparing the altar, presenting the gifts, announcing the prayer of the faithful, acting as an usher or as a collector, distributing Holy Communion, serving at the altar.
Many parishioners are directly involved in the liturgical and practical life of the parish. You might consider becoming involved in your parish in one of the following ways:
Eucharistic Ministers – involved in distributing Holy Communion at Sunday and weekday Masses, bringing communion to the sick and housebound, to the local hospital or nursing home
Readers – to proclaim God’s Word in the readings at Masses
Collectors – involved at weekend Masses in the collections
Choir and organists– to lead the community at Mass in praying through music and song
Altar Society – to clean and prepare the Churches so that they are fitting places of worship
Flower arranging – preparing flowers for the churches so as to draw some of God’s beautiful creation into our celebrations
Contact people – distribute parish literature and the yearly boxes of envelopes to the homes of our parish
